Prior to the 20th century, cob was the only wall-building material available
in many areas. A mixture of clay, straw, water and small stones, cob was
built up in sections and beaten down to remove air and excess water. And,
as it dries, it shrinks which is not a problem during building.
However, shrinkage, leading to cracking, can be a problem
when replacing sections of cob in ancient buildings. Faced with this challenge
in an old barn we were forced to develop new techniques and our famous
cob blocks were born. |
|
Today, our cob blocks are dried, pre-shrunk and ready to go. Laid with
lime mortar, rendered with lime and lime-washed in beautiful natural colours,
they are ideal for the repair and restoration of old cob buildings and
for new-build projects too, inside or out.
In use, our cob blocks are quick and easy to handle and in a size familiar
to today's builders and DIY'ers. Cost-wise they compare well with conventional
alternatives.
